MIT professor Dr. Alterovitz initiated and directed a new course, Bioinformatics and Proteomics: an Engineering Problem-Solving Based Approach, which was standardized on a set of MathWorks tools including MATLAB and the Bioinformatics Toolbox. This class, which paralleled his ongoing cancer research, gave students access to cutting edge research from both MIT and Harvard. Because the MATLAB programming language is easy to learn, students, biology majors and engineers alike, could focus more on research rather than programming.
