R2022a

New Features, Bug Fixes, Compatibility Considerations

June 2022

Write and View Images with Image Channels

With a paid license, you can now write JPEG images to a ThingSpeak image channel. For information on creating an image channel, see Create an Image Channel. New API functionality to support image data in these channels is described on the following pages:

A new Image Display widget allows you to view the latest image written to an image channel. See Image Display.

For more information, see the following new examples:

Note

To create an image channel you must have a paid license. See How to Buy.

URL Encoding

Stricter requirements are in place so that query parameters sent as part of a Write Data GET Request now must be URL encoded (see application/x-www-form-urlencoded) to accommodate special characters. For example, spaces in URLs either must be specified as %20, or you can include the whole URL in quotes.

Simplified Response to POST

The server response to a channel update is simplified, without extraneous header text.

Performance Improvements

Several infrastructure enhancements deliver improved performance, better security, and bug fixes.

Upgrade to MATLAB R2022a on ThingSpeak

  • New features in MATLAB® are now available to ThingSpeak™ users. For details see the MATLAB Release Notes.

 Legacy MQTT API Removed

The legacy MQTT API has been removed and is no longer supported. This includes the following changes:

  • The broker URL mqtt.thingspeak.com is no longer supported. Use mqtt3.thingspeak.com instead.

  • MQTT API keys are no longer supported, and no longer appear in your ThingSpeak account profile. Instead use MQTT device credentials.

 Compatibility Considerations

For information on updating your code and workflows to the new MQTT API, see MQTT3 Interface.
