R2014a windows 8.1 64bit setup.exe doesn't install matlab

I just downloaded R2014a 64bit for my Win8.1 laptop. I get the .exe which unzips itself into _temp_matlab_R2014a_win64
I go into this folder and run setup.exe.
It proceeds to do the Microsoft C++ Redistributable thing and then nothing. The window just closes and then nothing happens. No error, nothing. I've checked for a background process, run as an admin and moved the folder out of downloads.
The instructions say that I need to log into the installer with my mathworks id and such, but it doesn't get to that point.
Thanks in advance for any help/advice. I need this for a project so semiurgent.

See Installation Help. If you can’t find your problem there, click on ‘Contact Support’ near the upper right corner of that page.
I'm having the same issue with the same set up. Please report back if you find an answer.
Since the Mathworks gives free telephone support for all installation problems, even for student editions, and because there could be a trillion reasons why something doesn't work on your particular system, we (at least I) are reluctant to spend much time helping you debug it. If you had called them, your problem would probably be solved by now. Take advantage of their free help and get it solved quickly.
If the problem is with the Microsoft installers, you can get the Microsoft installers here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5555 - be sure to search for the right year. Try to install it separately first, before you try MATLAB installation and maybe it will skip the MS installation and work.
I am also having this problem. I did attempt to call technical support here in Australia, and although we are well into MathWorks opening hours for the day, the phone message states that they are closed and that there is nobody available to help.
Call again. What happened when you tried to download it from Microsoft.com and install it? Did you try that?
I'm having the same issue (and tried the same things, to no avail). I'll say something here if I find a way to solve it.
I have tried the suggested answers, but nothing is working.
I have exactly this same problem. The setup file runs Microsoft C++ Redistributable and then nothing happens. I really need to get back to using Matlab.
Is there no solution for this . If not what is the use of mat lab
Hello,
I was having exactly the same problem.
After reading about concerns related to antivirus behavior, I uninstalled Norton Security and after the reboot I could install Matlab R2015a successfully.
It seems that the antivirus does not allow the Matlab installer run correctly and does not warn about this.
Matlab installer should warn about these issues too.
I hope this help.
install the bit version.
i tried , it worked
I got this problem for r2014b on Windows 10. I rebooted the computer and it worked :P

Hi all, I found a way to get Matlab installed (on my Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11S), running Windows 8.1. The first part of the Answer given here seemed to work (though the questioner’s symptoms were different to mine, which were more like the ones in this post):
I used just the first step of those suggestions (without all of the later steps where it's identified what might be causing a problem - i.e. Step 1, parts a to g, and then something like Step 7 to return back to the original settings after everything installed).
It seems to be installed and working OK so far (I've not had the time to test it fully yet, but it seems OK).
Hope that helps you, too.
I have exactly the same problem. As I understand it is caused by impossibility to install Visual Studio C++ 2008 redistributable on Win 8 machine. Matlab requires a C++ compiler to be installed (<http://www.mathworks.com/support/compilers/R2014a/index.html>) and it seems that there is no free option for Win 8.1. SDK 7.1 doesn't support Win 8. The only free version is Visual Studio Express 2013. But it is not listed as a Matlab supported compiler. Any solution?

To clarify, MATLAB does not generically require a compiler. A compiler is only required for MEX and a other features and products as identified in the column headers of the supported compilers page.
