All existing Student Version of MATLAB are 32 bit products. I think I read somewhere that the Student Versions are not officially supported for installation on 64 bit systems (except the Mac OS-X version), but that the R2011a version would be expected to work.
R2009a is the first Student Version that supported Windows 7 at all; a number of people had trouble installing R2009a Student Version on Windows 7.

The 32 bit version does not run in the "Program Files (x86)" path. Perhaps the parenthesis confuse the path parser. I've created a space free "ProgramFiles_x86" folder for such sensitive programs.
