Cannot use xlsread or xlswrite

I keep getting this error whenever I want to use xlsread or want to open excel from MATLAB. 'You may not have an application associated with the given file extension' This happens with both xls and xlsx files. What can I do ?
I am using MATLAB 2014b and Excel 2013

Vinay - what happens when you try to open an xls or xlxx file from a file browser? Does Excel automatically launch when you double-click on the file?
