Greek letters in Matlab Linux

I had some codes to generate figures with Greek letter axis labels which worked fine in windows versions and Linux version R2015a, but the letters (eg \lambda) can't be generated properly in Linux R2012b. Is there any way to get around with this since I'd like to stick to Linux R2012b for various reasons. Many thanks.

Can you elaborate on can't be generated properly?
Is the syntax rotated?
Are the symbols that you see are not correct or of different size?
