Can MATLAB be reinstalled on the same PC without losing an activation?

If for any reason (such as hard drive replacement or system refresh) I need to reinstall MATLAB on a PC on which it was previously installed, do I have to deactivate and reactivate the software in order to preserve the original activation? Or, does the activation automatically recognize that the re-installation is taking place on the same machine again.

As far as I remember you get asked during uninstallation whether or not you want to deactivate the license on that PC so it depends what was selected when it was uninstalled. Certainly that was the case for me when I reinstalled the latest Matlab last week. I chose not to deactivate so I could still run R2014b between uninstalling and reinstalling R2015a
