What is the external and which is the internal contour? Assuming both contours are present in the image you provided, then you're going to have an extremely difficult time telling them apart. This could be an artifact of the low resolution of the provided image, but both contours rely on 8-bit connectivity of pixels and both contours are connected by pixels with 8-bit connectivity making them tough to distinguish.
