How to get a variable assigned directly to Empty matrix: 0-by-1?

If I type the variable name say 'a' in cmd window I should get
Empty matrix: 0-by-1
What should i assign to 'a' ??
a=..... ?

Just out of curiosity, in what case would you need this?

a = zeros(0,1)

Or ones(0,1).
