I discovered this when I was looking for evenly spaced vertices on a sphere. I wanted to map the Fibonacci spiral onto a sphere to achieve this. Although I couldn't get this to work, I happened to stumble across the "weird" colormap colorcube, which had a pretty cool effect on the animated spiral.
I don't know what these segmented color maps are actually used for :p
