A pair of coupled harmonic oscillators, one subject to an external harmonic force, exhibits a distorted resonance (an 'anti-resonance') similar to Fano resonances in wave systems. The driven oscillator amplitude can have a normal resonant response near its natural frequency but an anti-resonant response near the natural frequency of the 2nd oscillator and its motion be blocked. This script calculates the steady-state solution analytically and displays the effect. ‘Try this’ suggestions are included for further exploration. The script may interest students and instructors in physics and engineering.
