Transition to ISO 26262 Compliant Development Through Gap Analysis

W. James Allen, BorgWarner

ISO 26262 has been around for over ten years, is now viewed by the industry as a “best practice,” and may in future become a regulatory requirement. Because of the lag in adoption due to automotive product life cycles, engineering teams may not have gained the necessary practical experience to understand the expectations and work product deliverables required by such a project. Succeeding in an ISO 26262 project requires both formal training and practice in the art. It is also necessary to know the proper time in a project to get outside help to gain the experience and guidance to succeed. An ISO 26262 gap analysis is a good way to receive the feedback needed to direct resources to deliverables that will meet the expectations of the assessors.
