MATLAB on Linux ARM (Beta)

The MATLAB® Linux® ARM® 64-bit open beta is an early build that lets you run MATLAB, Simulink®, and selected toolboxes on Linux ARM systems.

Note

Support for Linux ARM systems is in beta development. Software development is ongoing, and features are subject to change.

Requirements

To install and run MATLAB, you need:

  • An ARM AArch64 (ARM64) processor.

  • 8 GB of RAM (minimum). 16 GB of RAM (recommended).

  • 15 GB of storage. An SSD is strongly recommended.

  • A Linux operating system.

Sign Up and Download Software

To sign up for the beta, go to MATLAB R2026b Linux ARM 64 Open Beta, complete the sign-up form, and accept the Software License Agreement. Then click the link provided to download the .tar.gz archive.

Install MATLAB

Choose one of two ways to install and run the software.

  • (Recommended) Install the required software dependencies, extract the .tar.gz archive, and run MATLAB. This approach provides the familiar MATLAB desktop experience.

  • Alternatively, you can run the software in a prebuilt Docker® or Apptainer container. The container contains all of the required dependencies. For more information about the advantages of using containers, see What is a Container?.

Recommended Installation

To install and run MATLAB on a Linux ARM system, follow these steps:

  1. Go to MATLAB R2026b Dependencies (GitHub) and select the folder that corresponds to your Linux distribution.

  2. Download the file base-dependencies-arm64.txt, which contains a list of required software dependencies.

  3. Install the listed dependencies. For example, on Ubuntu® or Debian®, run this command.

    sudo apt-get install `cat ./base-dependencies-arm64.txt`

  4. Extract the contents of the .tar.gz archive into the folder where you want to install MATLAB. This command uses version 3.1.1 of the archive, but the version number is subject to change.

    tar -xf MATLABR2026b_OpenBeta_aarch64_v3.1.1.tar.gz -C /path/to/install/folder
  5. Start MATLAB by calling matlab from the MATLAB/R2026b/bin folder of your installation.

    /path/to/install/folder/MATLAB/R2026b/bin/matlab

Run MATLAB in a Container

To run MATLAB in a container, follow these steps:

  1. Extract the contents of the .tar.gz archive into the folder where you want to install MATLAB. These commands use /opt/matlab as the installation folder.

    sudo mkdir -p /opt/matlab
    sudo tar -xf MATLABR2026b_OpenBeta_aarch64_v3.1.1.tar.gz -C /opt/matlab
  2. Run the prebuilt Docker image. The first time you run this command, Docker pulls the image from the GitHub® Container Registry.

docker run --init -it --rm \
    -v /opt/matlab:/opt/matlab \
    ghcr.io/mathworks-ref-arch/matlab-dockerfile/matlab-arm64:r2026b-ubuntu26.04

Alternatively, if you are using Apptainer (formerly known as Singularity), run this command to pull the image, convert it to a .sif file, and run the container.

    apptainer run \
      --bind /opt/matlab:/opt/matlab \
      docker://ghcr.io/mathworks-ref-arch/matlab-dockerfile/matlab-arm64:r2026b-ubuntu26.04 -nodisplay

These commands use a container with an Ubuntu 26.04 base image and start MATLAB in an interactive command-line prompt. For instructions on how to use a base image with a different Linux distribution, run MATLAB in a browser, or build your own container, see Run MATLAB on Linux ARM in a Container (GitHub).

    Tip

To give the container access to the GPUs on your system, include --gpus all in your Docker run command or --nv in your Apptainer run command. For more information, see Use GPUs in Containers.
