I have a figure with two different plots on it. I have a second figure with two different plots on it. I'm trying to have the output show Figure 1 side-by-side with Figure 2. So I want adjacent figures rather than adjacent plots. I tried subplot but this did not seem to work. Thank you.

could you give an example code of your attempt so far? I'm a little confused as what you want to do. So far this is what I suppose you want to do:
subplot(121)
plot(rand(100,1)); hold on
plot(rand(100,1),'r')
subplot(122)
plot(rand(100,1)); hold on
plot(rand(100,1),'r')
You can use File->Export setup to resize the figure.
