how to segment joined characters

So i am currently working on character extraction,and the current implementation of regionprops that I am using tends to work fine.

However I would like some insight on how to go about seperating those cases which are tightly joined.

In that case regionprops ends up considering them as one component.

I would like to get v ,e and m seperate.
