multilayer perceptron for pattern recognition in an abandoned object detection system

Hello, I have to make an abandoned detection system and I am now in a very difficult step for me. I need to program a multilayer perceptron for knowing if a stationary object is a person or an object. I know that I have to introduce a databease with some patterns to the net but I don't know how I have to make it and how many layers I need...etc
