Why do I receive the error "This email is not linked to a license. Use a different email address..." when I try to launch MATLAB?

Why do I see the following error when I try to launch MATLAB?
This email is not linked to a license.
Use a different email address or go to your MathWorks Account to link a license. After the license is linked, try again.

This error indicates that MATLAB is activated to launch in a licensing mode which requires your MathWorks account to be linked to a specific type of "MATLAB (Individual)" license or Individual Startup Suite license.
If your MathWorks account is not linked to a license which supports this licensing mode, you can try to click the link in the error and that will bring you to your MathWorks Account page where you can link to a license. Some licenses like campus-wide licenses should automatically link to your MathWorks account if you have the correct email domain.
Alternatively, contact your IT Department for instructions on how to link to an appropriate license.
If you have a different type of license that you want to activate MATLAB to use like a network license, a Designated Computer license, or just a different "Individual" license which does not support this licensing mode (for example, you left a university and now you have a "Home" license that you want to activate), you can delete the "license_info.xml" file from MATLAB's licenses folder. You can then launch MATLAB as this should prompt you to activate. Doing so will allow you to activate a different license. The license_info.xml would be located in the matlabroot directory, an example of this directory on Windows is:
"C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R20XXy\licenses\license_info.xml"
