How to fix a threshold for an image?

Hi, I have obtained the PDF of an gray scale image.The research paper I am referring to says to fix a threshold such that anything lower than the threshold becomes the foreground and the values above the threshold becomes the background. Based on what should I set my threshold value? Can anybody help me with the matlab code?

That is really hard when we dont know have information about your image. Can you use the function " histogram " and show us the results?
