DC link voltage of inverter

Please guys, i know that for voltage source inverter (VSI) you use capacitor to link the dc source to the inverter, and for CSI you use inductor to link the dc source to it. what I don't know is the function of the inductor and capacitor that is used to link the source to the inverter. what does dc link really mean.
