Why can't Matlab find GCC?

Windows 7 64-bit, 64-bit matlab, 64-bit gcc is installed, gcc is listed as compatible on the linked page:
>> which gcc
'gcc' not found.
>> which gcc.exe
C:\Programs\mingw-w64\x86_64-5.3.0-posix-seh-rt_v4-rev0\mingw64\bin\gcc.exe
>> !gcc --version

gcc and mingw are not listed for R2011a. You are possibly looking at the R2016a documentation.

The URL forwards to the PDF http://www.mathworks.com/support/sysreq/files/SystemRequirements-Release2011a_SupportedCompilers.pdf which lists lcc and various Microsoft VS and Intel compilers, and Open Watcom (which is not gcc or mingw)
