how to read xls file with char value?

after using xlsread function,Only numerical output variable but Character variable can not be read pleas guide me.

Use xlsread with at least two outputs:

[num,str] = xlsread(filename);

I have found that pretty much every time that I need strings from a .xls or .xlsx file, that I need to use the third output from xlsread, the "raw" output. -- otherwise it gets too messy to try to figure out which numbers correspond to which strings, in my experience.
