Typical hot keys do not work in matlab 2017a

Hot keys such as ctrl-c do not work for me in matlab. Also, If I use my track pad to scroll, then matlab continuously displays MEvent. CASE!
I can't figure out how to fix this issue.

For "MEvent. Case!" see this Answer.
For the keyboard shortcuts, check whether "Emacs Default Set" or "Windows Default Set" is enabled in the Preferences. From the behavior you described and the fact that you tagged this as Ubuntu, I suspect Emacs is enabled. If that's the case you may want to switch to the Windows set.
