Matlab 2018a hangs on the splash screen with 100% CPU in Linux

I've just installed Matlab R2018a on Fedora 28 and it activates fine but then it hangs on the splash screen with 100% CPU usage.
I've checked and it creates the preferences directory OK, and I can start Matlab with matlab -nodesktop and it works (though no figures, and if I try to use something like helpwin it crashes on exit). I've attached the error report from the crash on exit but it could be completely unrelated to the fact that it hangs on the splash screen (which is the issue that I'm bothered about).

If you still have R2018a installed just try launching MATLAB R2018a using the following command.
>>./matlab -desktop -logfile test.log
This will generate a log file and based on the error try one of the solutions mentioned in https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/399207-matlab-does-not-start-on-fedora-28?s_tid=answers_rc1-1_p1_MLT
