When to Use imadjust and when to use histeq

I tried using imadjust and histeq on the same gray scale images. When I used the imadjust function it made the image look better (better contrast) than when I used the histeq on the original grayscale image. I was led to believe that when the histogram (imhist) is more spread out that it leads to a better image, but it was less spread out when I used imadjust. I'm confused as to when to use imhist and imadjust and how do they differ
