Compression to DICOM image of 16 bits

Can I do compression to DICOM image of 16 bits. If so, how can I do that?

If I recall correctly, even the standard for CT (12 bits) is actually encoded as 16 bits. So what should this compression be?

Firstly, I have no existing DICOM file file that already has the kind of compression that I want.

Actually, I need any kind of compression. just I want to undestand the syntax of comression method for DICOM in Mat Lab (i.e the input is not commressed DICOM image, the out[ut is comressed DICOM image and vise versa)
