How can I purchase the student version of Matlab?

When I try to buy the student version of Matlab it tells me that it will cost 500$ I know students can get the program for 99$ but i'm not sure how.

How did you try? Did you call the Mathworks on the telephone? Sometimes the old fashioned way is the most effective.

It will tell you $500 (Academic price) if your MATLAB Central account is keyed to an Academic license.
It is possible to purchase the Student Version online; see the FAQ

In addition to this answer and previous comments: While this user is from the US and the information appears to be correct, the whole process may be different in the rest of the world. E.g. MathWorks field office do not sell the Student Version (it is only over the web) and thus can't consult. In addition there may be countries where there is no student version at all.
