Feature Extraction and Neural Networks

I'm having a diffcult time understanding how to do feature extraction in matlab. I've been given a dataset and I have to find a subset of input variables from the data. The dataset is the cancer dataset included in matlab. I'm just unsure on how to do feature extraction on this data.
