Creating a Simulink Exercise in MATLAB Course Designer

This video provides a guided walkthrough of how to create an interactive Simulink® Exercise using MATLAB Course Designer, a tool that enables educators to build hands‑on, auto‑graded learning activities for their courses. The demonstration begins with how to add a new Simulink Exercise to a module and access the editing interface where all instructional elements are authored.

First, we cover defining an exercise title and uploading a starting model. Instructors can begin with a blank model, reuse an existing system, or provide a partially completed framework for learners. Optional features such as custom block libraries and supporting files allow authors to control the modeling environment and provide additional resources tailored to the lesson.

Second, we show how to structure the core learning experience using the Background and Task sections. The Background provides theoretical context—such as equations, system descriptions, or conceptual explanations—while the Task outlines the specific modeling steps students must complete. Both sections support formatted text, images, hyperlinks, and LaTeX, enabling clear and visually rich instructional content.

Third, we move into adding the solution model and configuring automated assessments. The video demonstrates how to use the built-in test manager to verify that required blocks exist, confirm parameter settings (such as PID gains), validate signal routing, and assess signal behavior using reference data. These checks ensure that learners receive instant, consistent feedback when submitting their work.

Before publishing, instructors can switch to Learner Preview mode to view the activity exactly as students will experience it. This helps them validate clarity, functionality, and the overall learner journey. When an exercise is complete and passes all checks, a green indicator appears in the module overview, signaling that it is ready for release.

By the end of the video, educators will understand the complete process of building a Simulink Exercise—from authoring instructions and solution logic to implementing automated tests and previewing the final learner experience. The workflow enables instructors to create high‑quality, interactive modeling activities that support deeper conceptual understanding and hands-on skill development.
