The Empathetic Engineers of Tomorrow
Dr. Darryll Pines, University of Maryland
Today’s students are digital natives who want to make an immediate difference, but they are also coming of age with questions about the stability and worth of higher education. Yet in this era of rapid technological change, we need to keep increasing and developing our engineering talent to make sure we can address the grand challenges of our time.
That’s why we need to create the “empathetic engineer”: people with strong interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity who consider the ethical implications of their work while focusing on sustainability and social responsibility.
In this talk, University of Maryland President Darryll J. Pines will discuss how cutting-edge research, experiential learning opportunities, and grassroots education initiatives—including MATLAB® tools and research—are developing a new cohort of empathetic engineers and already making real change for real people."
