Why do I receive "Error -2002: The serial number you entered cannot be activated" after entering my Serial Number?

I get the following error message when trying to activate MATLAB Student:

 

ERROR: Error -2002: The serial number you entered cannot be activated. Contact MathWorks at http://www.mathworks.com/company/aboutus/contact_us/

You will receive this error when attempting to install MATLAB Student on multiple machines.

MATLAB Student allows you to activate MATLAB on up to two (2) computers.
