I'm trying to convert mathematica's SmoothDensityHistogram into matlab. I can obtain the smooth histogram, by plotting the pdf fro ksdensity but not the 2D density histogram. Any suggestions?

It does make plots like the ones you pointed to, as demonstrated by the images on the FEX download page. You've provided no information, so there's no way of telling what's going wrong.
