Why do I receive error -2006 'maximum number of activations exceeded' when attempting to activate MATLAB Student Version?

I own a license for the Student Version of MATLAB, and am attempting to activate it on a computer. 

During the activation process, I am getting a message about exceeding the number of activations available, with error number -2,006 listed.

Activation Error -2006 means that the maximum number of activations for this license have been reached. To activate MATLAB, you will need to deactivate your current activations for use on another computer.

In order to remove a previous activation, you should perform the following steps:

1. Visit the MathWorks website and log into your MathWorks Account.
2. Click on your name in the top right-hand corner of the page and then the 'My Account' link
3. On the 'My Account' page, you should see a box that says 'My Licenses', which lists your license number(s). Select 'Manage License' next to the number in question.
4. The resulting page should list your current activation, and will list action buttons next to each. Click 'Deactivate' to deactivate the activation.
5. Follow the remaining on-screen instructions to finalize the deactivation, and then re-attempt the installation/activation on the machine which displayed the error message.
