Why does my MLAPP file get unzipped when placed in WinZip?

I need to compress an MLAPP file to send it to a secure network. When I try dragging this file into WinZip, it creates several directories and files. If I unzip this file, I can't get the original MLAPP back.
Why does this happen? Is there a workaround for this workflow?

The reason WinZip unzips the MLAPP is because the MLAPP is essentially a compressed folder containing several directories and files that are relevant to the app. WinZip sees the file as a compressed file and unzips the MLAPP when you drag-and-drop it, rather than compressing it.
There are several workarounds:
  1. create a ZIP file in WinZip and add the MLAPP file to that.
  2. place the MLAPP file in a folder, then drag-and-drop that folder into WinZip.
  3. use a different method of compressing the MLAPP file. For example, Windows allows you to right-click the MLAPP, then select "Send To -> Compressed (zipped) folder". Alternatively, 7Zip also allows you to compress the file.
