MATLAB Plots in Microsoft Office

I once had a little program a colleague wrote that analyzed some data, created plots, and then embedded them in a Word document where I could click on the curve in the plot and it would update all the other plots to be clicked on the same point in time and we could easily see the value of the data on the plot as there was a little tag of sorts on the plot reading out the value.
I has been a number of years and the original program has been lost to time and upgraded software packages, however, we would like to create something similar today. Does anyone know how to do this? I know it can be done because I have seen it done before. The key is that the plots were not static in Word, but we were able to interact with them.

Are you perhaps thinking of the MATLAB Notebook interface? It's been quite a while since I last used it, so I don't remember how interactive the notebooks were.

I've tried this and maybe this is what I need to do, however, when I make plots in the notebook I'm unable to interact with them, they are basically jpeg screen grabs of the figure window. I want to be able to interact with them, zoom in and out, use a data cursor (or something similar).
