Why do my MATLAB files appear corrupt on macOS High Sierra?

Apple released macOS 10.13 High Sierra on September 25, 2017 and changed the way macOS reports Language & Region preferences to MATLAB. When you update to macOS High Sierra, we recommend you upgrade to MATLAB R2017b, which can be downloaded here.

If you cannot update MATLAB to R2017b, then please follow the instructions below to see if you are affected and how to resolve the issue.

1. Determine if the Language your Mac is set to. You can do this by opening the “Language & Region” preference pane in System Preferences. Your current Language is at the top of the list on the left.

2. Is your default language set to any of the following languages?

• English
• Chinese (Simplified)
• Korean
• Japanese

I checked with Mathworks about a month ago, and they have not yet released MCR versions for old releases with the patch :(

Apple decides their release schedule arbitrarily, not at fixed times of the year, and not with a fixed beta period.

Apple does not have a fixed release schedule. Even when they announce a MacOS version at a WWDC, they beta it until it is "good enough" and then hold a press conference announcing it will be publicly released about 10 days later. They do appear to have officially switched to a yearly release, but the dates have been semi-regular for at most the last 3 releases.

By the way, Apple already had to release a major security patch for High Sierra, which hints that their release cycle is too tight; that will likely change.

Apple OS dev cycle has been fixed for years, and is very unlikely to change, plus or minus a few weeks, whatever you may think of their internal quality control. On that point, the Mathworks have little to brag about, and could spend some useful time reflecting on their own 6-month cycle. At least Apple does not charge you for bug correction.

Pierre, read the table that I posted a link to. The Apple OS dev cycle is decidedly not fixed.

Are people expecting that Mathworks will adjust its release schedule to have time to accomodate new MacOS releases, taking into account that Apple sometimes makes incompatible change in fairly late beta releases, and taking into account that Mathworks has trouble getting the attention of Apple deveopers to work through incompatibilities ? Apple only ever announces ahead of time that the new OS will be released in the "fall", which is any time before winter starts about December 21. Add another 6 weeks for time for Mathworks to have gotten Apple's attention and gotten them to release fixes, would require Mathworks to delay its fall release to early February -- a time that it would normally be beta testing its spring release. And people would still be complaining to Mathworks that Mathwork's earlier release did not support the new MacOS that hadn't even been released yet, the same way that people already complain that Mathworks' R20xxA release does not work with the MacOS released in fall of that year -- and the way that people complain that Mathworks releases from several years earlier do not work with MacOS versions released several years later.
