How to make a plot?

I have a series of data files with various columns of data (*.dat). The first column in these files has earthquake magnitudes and the third column has the dates of format mm/dd/yy hh:mm. I need to plot date vs magnitude on a scatter plot. I need to load in two data files at once. I need to do this for about 170 data files. How can I load the data then plot it using one script. So far I have:

load dates1.dat

magnitude = dates1 (:, 1);

date = dates1 (:, 3);

scatter (date, magnitude) ;
