Why will MATLAB not launch on a Windows system with Kaspersky anti-virus software?

I cannot launch MATLAB. Either MATLAB fails to open at all, or I get the following error message:
Can't start MATLAB (line:753) System Error:2, The system cannot find the file specified.

This error message seems to be caused by the a false positive detection of a virus within the MATLAB.exe executable by Kaspersky anti-virus software.
Restoring any quarantined MATLAB.exe files from within the Kaspersky interface should restore regular operation.
