How do I access special characters, such as square brackets '[ ]' when using MATLAB with an international keyboard on a Mac OSX?

The Option key that I typically use to access these characters does not work in MATLAB 6.5 (R13) on Mac OS X.

This bug has been fixed for Release 14 (R14). For previous releases, read below for any possible workarounds:
This is a bug in the MATLAB 6.5 (R13) for Mac OS X (Puma). To resolve the problem, you will need to upgrade your operating system to Mac OS X (Jaguar) and install the patch for MATLAB on Jaguar. More information on this patch can be found in the Related Solution listed below.
