Hi,
i´m student user of 2012a. I saw that version 2012b is out. Can I upgrade to this version or do I have to buy a new license?

Hi Tobias,
For these types of questions, it's always best to contact MathWorks directly.
You can look at the FAQ for the student version here:
It seems like the following addresses your question:
*Q. Can I upgrade from older versions of MATLAB and Simulink Student Version? *
A. Student Version upgrades are not offered at this time. If you want to use the current MATLAB and Simulink Student Version release, you must purchase a copy and activate your software. You can install the current version on a machine with an older version. The older version will function properly, but may require the disc in the drive for startup.

The month doesn't matter - that's all you get until next March because it's the student version. So, unless you would have been willing to wait 7 months without using any MATLAB at all until the next student version comes out, you did the right thing.

Read the thread here at Answer on R2012b: Experiences with release 2012b. That will make you more happy with R2012a.

While Wayne's answer with regards to upgrade is correct, I like to state that R2012b is out for the professional version, but not for the Student Version.
Which means that you can't neither upgrade nor purchase new.

Right. The only *b Student Version that has ever existed was R2008b, with there having been no R2008a Student Version.
