Interesting poll! I wonder if the sample of respondents is biased toward newer users who may be more likely to find the poll while perusing the forum for help.

I like the idea of doing a poll for every cognitive bias. My next poll: "I'm doing a survey to see who knows about Confirmation Bias. You've heard of it, right?"

  1. Yes
  2. Probably

Or, "Have you ever participated in a MathWorks poll including this one?" 1. Yes. 2. No.

I like your phrase "the last century." I already feel old enough (having started in 1987), so I'm glad you didn't say "the last millennium"!

Good one Ned. Too bad the polls don't let you edit them after submitting them. By the way, I started programming in 1978 (so I guess I'm the dinosaur here), Ph.D. in 1988, and started MATLAB in 2006.

LoL...I thought that start using MATLAB during the 90's was like being a dinosaur...but you win Ned ;-) !

When I give my background spiel, I tell people that I got my Ph.D. "in a prior millennium". (Ph.D. in '92, using Fortran. Started using MATLAB in my first postdoc.)

I managed to find a picture of me using MATLAB at Stanford back in the 1900s. As you can see, I'm using one of the very first mousewheels.
